Having done farm work on Bainbridge Island for decades, Teddy finally purchased five acres of his own. He and his wife Gloria built their house in 1953, growing berries, corn, and other vegetables while raising their four children there.Over time, strawberry farming began to slowly decline and the end of an era was marked by the death of Akio Suyematsu in 2012- the last Asian American farmer on Bainbridge Island to make their livelihood from farming. My name is Maria Morales and I am a small, sustainable farmer and business… Maria Morales needs your support for Maria Morales Farm Destroyed During CA Floods
My name is Maria Morales and I am a small, sustainable farmer and business owner in the Central Coast region of California.Maria Morales is organizing this fundraiser. On January 9th, my family and I left our 15-acre farm in Gilroy to go get gas for our truck after spending a full day in the fields. Shortly after departing, I received a call from my nephew that our house and the surrounding areas were flooding. A creek on one of the hills surrounding my farm had overflowed, a result of the ongoing California winter storms. Now, my family and I are without a home and our business is destroyed. Because of the flood, we have lost almost everything from our home (food, clothing, furniture, personal care items) and our small business (income, farm equipment, seeds, inputs).

Today, local schools visit these farms for edible education programs and food from these farms is being served in Bainbridge School District lunches, through our Bite of Bainbridge program. The Morales Farm, located on the corner of Highway 305 and Lovgreen Road, is one of Bainbridge Island’s oldest working farms.Teddy Morales moved to the region in 1929 at age 16, where he joined relatives in doing seasonal farming up and down the west coast. After serving in WWII, Teddy and his first wife Gloria Paul settled on the island to raise four children and to help farm his cousin’s Lovgreen property.Teddy traded his expertise and help on the farm for 5 acres of the land, which makes up what we know today as the Morales Farm. During the height of the season, the farm produced an average of 800 ears of corn each day. Teddy and his second wife Tita grew “berries and a variety of vegetables sown in perfectly straight rows over the sunny rise of their property.Through the educational interest and generosity of Butler Green Farms and Friends of the Farms a parcel of public land at the Morales Farm was set aside for dedicated farm-school programs on Bainbridge.
The interns will work on property sub-let from the city by experienced farmers. Three new permanent structures will house up to two interns each (not to exceed five unrelated adults living on-site), utilizing the Morales farmhouse for cooking and gathering facilities.
The Morales house is approximately 1,400 square feet with three small bedrooms and one bathroom. The interior was built in the 1950s as a single-family residence and is not “ideally designed or constructed for living space by unrelated adults,” documents read. “Prior to the city’s acquisition of the property, the farmhouse had fallen into disrepair,” a FOF memo reads. The Bainbridge City Council recently authorized Friends of the Farms to develop intern housing on the city-owned Morales Property and to apply for First Federal funding related to the reHOME project. The project has been reviewed by the city’s Planning and Building Department and the Kitsap County Health Department and conforms to municipal code and health regulations, per documents. Earlier in February, FOF received a building permit from the city to oversee pro bono work by Clark Construction to do necessary repairs and maintenance to the existing Morales Farmhouse.“In 2010, Friends of the Farms secured over $100,000 in cash and in-kind services and oversaw a complete renovation of the structure to LEED standards. Friends of the Farms began housing interns when the renovation was complete, and interns and new farmers have lived in Morales House every year from 2012 – 2019.”
The Spider-Man: Spider-Verse movies are some of the best superhero flicks going right now, and Marvel boss Kevin Feige has taken notice, hoping to get Miles Morales into the MCU shortly after Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Donald Glover is in Spider-Man: Homecoming, where he portrays weapons dealer and petty criminal Aaron Davis, also known as the villain Prowler. He mentions a nephew to Tom Holland's Spider-Man, and in the comics and Sony films, this is Miles Morales.Glover was actually the inspiration behind Miles Morales. Following his appearance in a Community Halloween episode where he dons a Spider-Man suit, the Donald4Spiderman movement arose, wanting to cast him in the role that later went to Andrew Garfield. We've already had a reference to Miles Morales in the MCU.So, while we don't know for sure if Morales will appear in the MCU, we know Feige wants him there, and while Glover may be a little too old to play the teenager, he could reprise his role as Prowler.
Agricultural Open Space: This property is the last remaining vegetable farm in Grand County. The property was used for growing oats and barley in the early 1900s. In the 1920s, Morales Farms was the center of high-altitude lettuce production. Granby head lettuce was well known across the country.
Lettuce production in Grand County began to decline in the 1940s due to competition from other areas of the country where lettuce could be grown at a lower cost. The farm has grown vegetable row crops and alfalfa since the 1970s. Scenic Open Space: The public can view the Morales Farms easement from County Roads 608 and 609 and when they visit the property to purchase fresh produce directly from the landowners. This farm is directly south of another conservation easement held by Colorado Headwaters Land Trust, together creating 159.5 acres of protected land just outside of the Town of Granby. The property is very scenic with 360 degrees of open views of surrounding mountains and valleys.

As you’re driving north on Highway 305, you’ll notice several “hoop” greenhouses at the intersection of 305 and Lovgreen Road, and beyond that, rows and rows of grapes. The 5-acre property known as Morales Farm, is one of Bainbridge Island’s oldest working farms, and the home to sublease farmers Brian MacWhorter of Butler Green Farms, John Chang of Peaceful Morning Farm, and Mike Lempriere of Perennial Vintners.Teddy Morales, a Filipino immigrant, arrived in the U.S. in 1929 and eventually made his way to Bainbridge, where he worked as a farm hand for decades before joining the World War II effort. After his return from the war, Teddy was able to acquire the 5-acre parcel which became known as The Morales Farm.He and his growing family farmed berries, a variety of vegetables, and a prolific crop of sweet corn. The main farmhouse, which is still intact today, was built in 1953. In the 1990s, the Morales family moved to the Philippines and the property was eventually purchased by the City of Bainbridge Island via an open space bond approved by voters in 2001.As part of my ongoing series on the Friends of the Farms, I met with Heather Burger, Executive Director of FotF to learn more about Morales Farm. I was a bit early for our tour and wandered around, taking a few pictures and enjoying the sunshine. A particular plot, located near the entrance on Lovgreen Road, stood out.
